Our World

This page will showcase some of the learning we are doing in the learning area ‘Society and the Environment’.

This term LA2 children are learning about how people in our community help us.

Fire Fighters

Some fire fighters came to our school to visit. They talked to us about fire safety, and we sang some songs to help us remember about fire safety.
We found out that you call the fire fighters when there is an emergency. Fire fighters put out fires. Sometimes they also help rescue people and animals.
Fire fighters sometimes wear special clothes that help protect them from fire. Can see the picture below that shows the fire fighter dressed up in protective clothing?
The fire fighters also showed us their fire engine. There is a lot of equipment stored on the fire engine. Some of the things that we saw on the fire engine included ropes, stretchers, fire hydrants, huge metal pliers, and of course the hoses.

Doctor and Nurse

We have had a visit from a doctor and a nurse.
Dr Dave brought in ‘Stanley’ the skeleton. He put on his cap and mask, and gave one to each child in the class so he was not the only one who looked silly! We learnt about some of the things doctors do, and about some of the different bones in the human body.
Dorothy the nurse brought lots of different medical items to show us. She also showed the class how to put on a bandage. RC and EB enjoyed being bandaged up!

Police

We had a visit from a police officer. We found out that the main job of a police officer is to protect us, and help keep us safe.
Children found out that police officers use a lot of different forms of transport. Police officers use horses, motor bikes, push bikes, trucks, planes, boats, helicopters and cars. The police officer that came to visit our class brought his car to show us.

Lifesaver

Julie the Lifesaver talked to us about lifesavers. We found out that lifesavers help keep people safe when they are at the beach. Lifesavers rescue people from the water if they are drowning.
Lifesavers wear a bright uniform so that people can see them easily. Their uniform has long sleeves to protect them from the sun. They also wear a hat to protect them from the sun.

Vet Nurse

We also had a visit from a vet nurse, her name was Brook.
We found out that animals go to the vet when they are sick or hurt. Animals also go to the vet to help them keep healthy. Animals get vaccinations to stop them from getting some diseases.
Brook brought in some lizards.
